My Phone is Slow! Simple Tricks to Speed Up Your Device
Remember that feeling of opening a brand-new phone? The apps launched in an instant, navigating menus was a breeze and everything flowed. Now, a little time has passed, and perhaps that sleek, zippy device feels more like it's trudging through molasses.
You’re not alone! This digital slowdown is a common experience. It’s easy to assume that a slow phone means it’s time for an expensive upgrade or repair, but that’s often not the case. You don't need to be a tech wizard to bring your device back up to speed. Most of the common causes of slowdowns are surprisingly simple to address, often involving just a few taps and swipes.
Declutter Your Phone

1. Delete Unused Apps
This is perhaps the simplest, yet most effective step you can take. Over time, we all accumulate apps that seemed like a good idea at the moment, and each takes up storage space. Some even run in the background, quietly consuming your phone's processing power and battery. Take a few minutes to scroll through your apps. Do you use them all? If not, send the ones you don't packing.
On iPhone: To remove unused apps, gently press and hold an icon until all are jiggling. Tap the "X" on the top left of the app you want to delete. Confirm by tapping "Delete App."
On Android: Press and hold an app icon. You'll usually see an option to "Uninstall" or an "i" for App Info. Drag it to "Uninstall" or tap "Uninstall" in the menu.
2. Manage Photos and Videos
Our phones have become incredibly powerful cameras. While wonderful, these photos and videos are massive storage hogs. If your phone is bursting at the seams with thousands of images and clips, then it's struggling to find space and process new information. This is a prime culprit for sluggish performance, but there are many ways to clear up space without losing your cherished memories.
Back up to the Cloud: Services like Google Photos or Drive, Apple iCloud and Dropbox offer generous (sometimes even unlimited, depending on the service) storage for media. Once backed up, you can safely delete the originals from your phone, knowing they’re accessible whenever you need them.
Transfer to a Computer: For a more hands-on approach, connect your phone to your computer and transfer photos and videos directly.
Review and Delete Duplicates/Unnecessary Shots: We often take multiple shots to get the perfect one. Go through your photo library and delete blurry ones, duplicates and random screenshots.
3. Empty Cache and Temporary Files
Every time you browse the internet, open an app or stream content, your phone stores temporary data in a "cache." This is meant to speed things up on subsequent visits by not having to download everything from scratch. However, over time, these temporary files accumulate, taking up space and sometimes becoming corrupted, which can actually slow down your device. Thankfully, you're able to empty you're cache, with the process looking different on each gadget.
Browser Cache: In your web browser (like Chrome, Safari or Firefox), go to settings and look for an option like "Privacy," "Security" or "Clear Browsing Data." Here you can clear "Cache," "Cookies" and "History."
App Cache (Android): For individual apps, go to your phone's main settings and select "Apps" (or "Apps & Notifications"). Tap on an app, then "Storage," and you'll usually see the option to "Clear Cache." This clears temporary files without deleting important login info or saved data.
App Cache (iPhone): iPhones handle app caches differently, often automatically clearing them. However, for some apps, like social media or streaming services, you might find a "Clear Cache" option within the app's own settings.
Streamline Background Operations

Apps and services often run quietly in the background of your phone, consuming resources without you even realizing it. Taming these background operations can significantly free up your phone's resources.
4. Review App Permissions and Background Refresh
Many apps are designed to constantly update in the background, whether it’s checking for new emails, refreshing social media feeds or updating weather information. These processes drain battery and consume valuable processing power, making your phone feel sluggish. But fear not! There are ways to prevent certain (or all) apps from running in the background.
App Permissions: Go to your phone's main settings, then look for app permissions. Review which ones have access to things like your location, microphone, camera and especially "Background App Refresh" (on iPhone) or "Background Data Usage" (on Android).
Turn off permissions for apps that don't genuinely need them or that you don't want updating constantly.
5. Take Control of Updates: Manage Automatic Downloads
Our phones are constantly updating. While updates are crucial for security and new features, automatic updates can sometimes hit at inconvenient times, slowing your device down significantly as it tries to download and install large files in the background.
Go to your phone's app store settings (App Store on iPhone, Google Play Store on Android). Look for options related to "App Updates" or "Automatic Downloads." You can set them to "Wi-Fi Only" or "Off."
System Updates: For the operating system, most phones will notify you when an update is available. Instead of letting it happen automatically, schedule it for a time when you won't be using your device (like overnight) or when you have a stable Wi-Fi connection.
Maintaining Device Health

Beyond clearing clutter and managing background tasks, there are a couple of fundamental practices that contribute to your device's overall health and longevity, ensuring it stays responsive for the long haul.
6. Restart Your Device Regularly
This might sound almost too simple, but it’s effective. Think of your phone's internal processes as a bustling office. Over time, little glitches, open programs and fragmented memory can start to pile up, causing things to slow down. A restart is like pressing a reset button, clearing out all those temporary files and background processes that might be hogging resources. It gives your device a fresh start.
7. Keep Your Software Updated
While we just talked about managing when updates happen, ensuring your phone’s operating system and apps are reasonably up-to-date is crucial for both performance and security. Software updates often include performance enhancements, bug fixes and optimizations that can actually make your device run more smoothly and efficiently. They also patch security vulnerabilities, keeping your personal information safer.
App Updates: Regularly check your app store for app updates and install them.
